Trinidad and Tobago: State of Emergency Extended for Three Months

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | September 13th, 2011 | Trackback

Last month the small island country announced a limited state of emergency, citing an increase in deadly gang violence sparked by 11 murders in just 48 hours. This week authorities announced that the state of emergency will be extended for an additional three months, arguing that the measures taken have prevented an even greater criminal uprising from occurring. Included in the state of emergency are an 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew and greater liberty for police officers to search suspects and seize property without a warrant. Travelers planning to visit Trinidad and Tobago should be aware of the extended state of emergency through December as well as the security concerns that this extension implies.
