El Salvador: Sharp Drop in Kidnappings
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Kidnappings in the country dropped by 50 percent in 2011 compared with last year. Despite the sharp decline, there has been a surge in “express kidnappings,” crimes in which the assailant holds the victim for a few hours and demands that the victim hand over money from his or her bank account. Rodolfo Delgado, the chief prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Special Unit for Organized Crime, blames this surge on recidivist criminals allied with prison gangs. Despite the spike in express kidnappings, the general trend is a positive for El Salvador as tourism continues to grow as a major sector in the nation’s economy.
