Philippines: Hotel Bombed in Turbulent South

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | November 30th, 2011 | Trackback

Islamic militants are believed to be behind a hotel bomb that killed 3 and left 27 injured in Zamboanga City in the troubled southern region of Mindanao. Many of the victims were guests of a wedding set to be held Nov. 28. The group responsible is believed to be the al-Qaida linked Abu Sayyaff militants who had planned a simultaneous explosion on Basilan island, though that plot was foiled when the explosives were found and safely defused. Abu Sayyaff was founded in the early 1990s during a period of violent Muslim insurgency and has been active in Basilan, Jolo, the Sulu Archipelago and Mindanao. The group is also believed to be holding an American, an Indian, a Malaysian and a Japanese convert to Islam, along with a number of Filipino hostages.
