United Kingdom: Cambridge Considering Tourist Taxes

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | November 7th, 2011 | Trackback

At a time when England’s tourist numbers are dropping, Cambridge is considering measures to reduce tourism. Former Mayor and now Councilor John Hipkin wants to turn Cambridge into a long-stay, heritage vacation spot, banning tourists from parts of the city center and introducing an obligatory Cambridge Pass that tourists would have to buy to gain entrance to colleges and museums. Revenue from the Cambridge Pass would help pay for historic preservation and other public services for the four million tourists who come each year. There are some skeptics, however, who say such a move could damage the economy by thwarting tourism, which is, ironically, a staple of Cambridge’s economy.
