South Pacific: Travel Alert Regarding Cyclone Season
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |The U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert for the South Pacific regarding the coming cyclone season, which runs from December through April. The region sees about nine tropical cyclones per year, half of which are category three or higher in intensity. Cyclones can cause major infrastructure damage and make traveling throughout the region difficult and perilous. U.S. citizens living in or traveling through the South Pacific are advised to check local weather reports regularly and take appropriate action as dictated by local conditions. Citizens are also advised to pack safety kits, including bottled water, non-perishable food items, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio and vital documents, including passports and birth certificates.
