Philippines: Government says Country Safe for Tourists
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Despite a recent travel warning from the U.S. State Department, the Philippine government insists that the country is safe for tourists. In fact, the travel warning was released on the same day that the Philippine Department of Tourism revealed its new slogan: “It’s more fun in the Philippines.” Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said that while tourists should generally exercise caution while traveling, the Philippines is a generally safe place to visit. Most of the recent trouble has happened in the southern parts of the country, where Islamic militants have been waging a campaign of violence on and off for decades.
