Brazil: Armed Robbers Target Upscale Restaurants

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | June 20th, 2012 | Trackback

Armed robbers invaded an upscale Italian eatery called Gigio in early June, following a rash of restaurant robberies that have occurred in Sao Paulo this year. A type of group crime known locally as arrastão, or trawling, the restaurant version involves a team of armed men who raid an establishment at peak dining time, quickly strip patrons and workers of their valuables, and get away before police can be summoned. No injuries were reported and no suspects have been caught from the June 8 incident, but visitors should be aware that thieves may target high-end restaurants frequented by well-heeled tourists.
