Tibet: China Issues Ban on Foreign Tourists
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Following months of increasing civil unrest in Tibet, the Chinese government has issued a ban prohibiting all foreign tourists from visiting the region. Authorities did not cite a specific reason for the ban or estimate its duration, though a disturbing rise in the number of self-immolation protests—by Tibetans weary of authoritarian Chinese rule—may have been a factor. The order coincides with the start of the Saga Dawa festival, a month-long celebration of the Buddha’s birth that traditionally draws visitors from around the globe. Travelers who have already booked tours into Tibet are advised to contact their tour operators for further information.
