West Africa: Two Plane Crashes in One Day Leave 157 Dead

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | June 6th, 2012 | Trackback

Two deadly plane crashes June 3 left at least 157 dead and one airline grounded. Just hours after an Allied Air freighter hit ground vehicles near Accra, Ghana, a passenger plane operated by Dana Airlines went down over Lagos, Nigeria, killing everyone aboard and several more on the ground. Authorities have temporarily suspended Dana Airlines’ license to operate while the cause of the crash is under investigation. The risk of air accidents in Africa is said to be up to ten times higher than on other continents, despite fewer scheduled commercial flights. While an ageing aircraft fleet, poor training of pilots and engineers, and lack of infrastructure may be contributing factors, many experts point to inadequate safety oversight as a primary cause of Africa’s aviation accidents. Travelers to West and Central Africa should be aware that commercial flights in those regions are considered particularly unsafe to board.
