Maldives: Overthrown Leader Urges Tourists to Boycott
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Overthrown President Mohamed Nasheed has called for a tourism boycott of the island nation, which is famed for its white sand beaches and high-end luxury resorts. Tourism is the primary source of employment in Maldives and makes up about 30 percent of the gross national product. Nasheed has urged anyone who has booked a trip to the archipelago to cancel, and avoid “bankrolling an illegitimate government.” Nasheed’s election in 2008 followed a decades-long struggle for democracy, and his presidency drew criticism from conservative Muslim factions. He was removed from office by military coup in February.
