South Africa: American Tour Guide Mauled by Rescued Chimps

Chimpanzees attacked and mauled an American tour guide as he was leading a group around Chimp Eden, a wildlife sanctuary and rescue facility in eastern South Africa. Witnesses reported that the victim, who suffered severe bite wounds and other injuries, was giving a tour of the refuge when two adult chimpanzees grabbed him by the feet, pulled him under a fence and dragged him for several hundred feet. Paramedics were able to enter the animal enclosure with an armed guard to rescue the man, who was in listed in serious but stable condition at a local hospital. Park staff were still investigating the incident, which did not appear to have been provoked. Chimpanzees are five to six times stronger than humans and have been known to attack them unexpectedly.
