Greece: Wildfires Threaten Chios, Prompt Arson Inquiry
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Authorities are investigating the cause of a raging wildfire that broke out on the eastern Aegean island of Chios Aug. 18, sending tourists and residents scrambling. More than 20 separate fires blazed out of control for four days while strong, erratic winds hampered firefighters’ efforts. Although forest fires are common during the long, dry summers, the unusually high number of fires this season has prompted an official inquiry to determine whether arson might be involved. The resort islands of Zakynthos and Andros were also affected, and smoke was noticeable as far away as Crete, some 230 miles from the source.
