Sri Lanka: French Tourists Sentenced for Offending Buddhists
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |A Sri Lankan court handed down a suspended jail sentence to three French tourists over offensive photos they took inside a Buddhist temple. Tipped off by a local film-processing lab, authorities recovered snapshots depicting the two men and a woman posing inappropriately with statues and pretending to kiss the Buddha. Not only was their behavior insensitive, in a country of devout Theravada Buddhists, it was a criminal offense carrying a possible 5-year sentence with hard labor. In this case, the three paid a fine, but will not be required to serve time.
