Chile: Demonstration Turns Violent on Anniversary of Coup
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |What began as a peaceful march through Santiago to honor victims of Chile’s former military dictatorship ended in violence Sept. 11. Thousands of Chileans had gathered to mark the somber anniversary of the 1973 coup that brought Gen. Augusto Pinochet to power, but the crowd dispersed as riot police pursued small groups of hooded protestors who blocked roads, lit fires and reportedly attacked a police station. Order was restored quickly; however, visitors to Santiago should exercise caution in large crowds, and avoid political demonstrations altogether. At least 3,000 people were killed and 30,000 more imprisoned and tortured under Pinochet’s 17-year reign.
