Costa Rica: Dengue Fever on the Rise
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |The Ministry of Health reported a dramatic increase in dengue fever since 2011, with 8,480 people affected and 9 dead so far this year. More than half of these cases occurred in the Limon region on the Caribbean coast. Found in nearly all tropical and subtropical zones worldwide, dengue virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and typically causes an acute, self-limiting illness with severe flu-like symptoms. However, at least one strain of the virus can lead to hemorrhagic fever and serious complications. Since there is no treatment or vaccine available for dengue, travelers should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites, and steer clear of outbreak areas when possible.
