Greece: Malaria Outbreak Could Add to Tourism Woes
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |A peaceful election and calm summer season may have helped the tourism industry rebound, but a malaria outbreak could scare off potential visitors. Of the 50 malaria cases identified in Greece so far this year, most occurred in agricultural areas and the cities of Marathon, Markopoulos and Evrotas in the Laconia region. Mosquito control and public education have been stepped up in these areas, and no cases were reported from Athens or other major tourist centers. However, the Centers for Disease Control has advised travelers to take precautions against mosquito bites, and to consult with a travel clinic or physician to determine whether anti-malarial medication is recommended for their planned itinerary.
