Guatemala: Volcano Eruption Scares Locals, Draws Tourists
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |More than 33,000 terrified locals were evacuated amid falling ash and chaos Sept. 13, when the Fuego Volcano erupted just 31 miles from Guatemala City. As seismic activity tapered off, evacuees were allowed to return home and the rumbling volcano turned into a tourist attraction, with many visitors coming from nearby Antigua to snap photos of glowing lava streams at night.
