India: Human Safaris Banned, But Tour Buses Still Running
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Despite an international outcry and subsequent government ban on “human safaris” in the Andaman Islands, visitors are still swarming the indigenous Jarawa reserve on sold-out tours. Tour buses, including those sponsored by the Andaman and Nicobar administration, haul an estimated 500 people per day in the high season to gawk at and otherwise interfere with the reclusive tribe. Environmentalists have warned that such activity will lead to the tribe’s cultural breakdown and eventual demise, and have urged travelers to avoid these illegal and irresponsible tours.
