Italy: Rockslide on Cinque Terre Trail Injures Four
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Four Australian tourists were injured—two severely—when a rockslide hit a popular hiking trail in the Cinque Terre coastal region. The women were walking with a tour group when rockfall suddenly slammed into the steep path, knocking one of the hikers from the cliff and crushing another under heavy boulders. Rescuers were able to get them out and transport them by helicopter to the hospital. Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of five cliffside towns linked by a series of coastal trails—known as the “Way of Love.” The trail itself is not considered difficult or particularly dangerous; however, heavy rains that occurred last year may have destabilized the overhanging rocks.
