Nepal: Planned Protests May Disrupt Transit, Tourism
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |As the trekking high season begins, a new wave of political protests may disrupt transit and tourism activity throughout the country. On Sept. 24, 13 opposition parties banded together with plans to overthrow Prime Minister Bhattarai and install a unity government. In response, the current government announced it will hold a series of rallies to garner public support. Large-scale demonstrations and general strikes are expected, and it is worth noting that bombings and other violence have occurred at these events in the past. While Nepal has a long history of political instability that generally has not affected tourists, visitors should avoid all political gatherings, and stay informed of planned strikes or protests that may affect their ability to travel from place to place.
