Thailand: Tourists Caught “Tiger Teasing” at Famed Temple
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |The famous “Tiger Temple” in western Kanchanaburi province has come under fire again, after a recent YouTube video showed a busload of tourists teasing the animals with bags of meat tied to long sticks. Animal rights’ groups have criticized the temple for years, claiming that the tigers are regularly and heavily sedated so that tourists can get much-coveted photos of themselves with the rare cats. Billed as a wildlife sanctuary and run by Theravada Buddhist monks, the temple charges an admission fee of about $19, and additional fees for photo opportunities. It currently houses about 115 tigers and is a popular stop for package tours.
