United Kingdom: Beatles Tours Annoy Liverpool Locals
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Annoyed by an increasing barrage of tour buses and taxi cabs, Liverpool residents are demanding that authorities clamp down on Beatles tours that bring hundreds of tourists to their homes and streets at all hours of the day and night. Since the city’s successful bid for more tourism in 2008, dozens of tour operators now bring visitors to the Fab Four’s old stomping grounds, including the otherwise quiet, middle-class neighborhood where George Harrison was born. Residents’ complaints include not only traffic and rising numbers of visitors, but a lack of respect shown for their private lives. Rabid fans have been known to peek in windows or even walk through front doors on “Beatles Streets” as if they were visiting a museum.
