Colombia: Ongoing Violence Prompts Updated Travel Warning
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Although security has improved overall, the U.S. Department of State has issued an updated travel warning following recent security-related incidents, including a car bombing that killed two people and injured 60 more in central Bogota. Parts of Bogota and Cartagena cities are considered very dangerous, and travel restrictions are in place for U.S. government employees and their families. Violence related to terrorism and drug trafficking continues to be a problem throughout the country, and many small towns and rural areas are controlled by armed criminal gangs. While kidnapping seems to be on the decline, foreigners may still be targeted. In 2011, two U.S. citizens were kidnapped in Colombia and one of them was killed.
