Ecuador: Tourists Released After Kidnapping Ordeal
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Two female tourists who were kidnapped during an organized canoe trip in Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve were released unharmed Oct. 2. Authorities believe a group of Colombian paramilitary extremists captured the 29-year-old British woman and 32-year-old Australian with the intention to ransom or kill them, but got nervous during the intensive helicopter and ground search that followed the incident and released the women after two days. The British Foreign Office has since updated its travel alert for the Colombian border zone, where drug traffickers and guerrilla groups are known to operate, warning foreign tourists that they may be at risk for robbery, kidnapping or other violence.
