India: Goa Tourists Should Take Their Own Trash Out, Locals Vote

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | October 31st, 2012 | Trackback

In effort to reduce the litter on their famous beaches, a local village in Goa has passed a resolution requiring tourists to pick up their own trash and take it with them. As in other parts of India, infrastructure is limited in Goa, and systems are already strained by local usage. The small villages along the state’s coastline lack the resources to handle the amount of garbage generated by 2.6 million visitors annually, including half a million foreigners. Since tourism authorities seem unable to address the problem as well, local leaders propose to issue large plastic bags to tourists for garbage collection and removal purposes. No mention was made regarding how and where tourists should dispose of their trash once they collect it.
