Italy: Rome Bans Street Snacking in Historic Center
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |When in Rome, be sure to finish that cup of gelato before you stroll across the piazza, or risk a ticket and hefty fine. Reflecting a cultural gap between foreign tourists and Italians, who never eat or drink on the street, Rome’s city council has banned snacking in the historic center. The new ordinance forbids eating or drinking in specific zones that have “a particular historic or architectural value,” including the Pantheon and the Colosseum, carrying fines up to 500 Euros ($650 U.S.) Italians have long considered such tourist behavior shocking, and similar restrictions are already in effect for historic sites in Venice, Florence and Bologna.
