Kenya: Security Issues Blamed for Tourism Slump

Tourism to once popular coastal resorts has dropped significantly in 2012, worrying some officials that ongoing Islamist threats may be scaring Westerners away. The rising cost of entry may be another factor, leading to fewer ships in Kenya’s ports and cancellations of charter flights. However, security issues are seen as the most likely deterrent for potential visitors. Great Britain, the U.S.A. and Australia have all issued travel advisories to their citizens regarding Kenya, updated after a British tourist was murdered near Lamu in 2011.
