Panama: Violent Protests Continue in Colon City

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | October 23rd, 2012 | Trackback

Anti-government demonstrations turned violent in Colon City after a new law passed that allows the government to sell land in the duty-free zone. Protestors have been burning tires and blocking streets in objection to this perceived threat to their jobs and income. More than 2,000 companies officially operate in the Free Trade Zone, the profitable port at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal that has been duty-free since the 1950s. Most of Panama remains safe to visit; however, Colon City protests are expected to continue for several weeks. Travelers are advised to take extra precautions in the area and monitor local news media for updates.
