Portugal: Dengue Fever Outbreak in Madeira

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | October 31st, 2012 | Trackback

An outbreak of dengue fever in the Madeira region has afflicted hundreds of people so far, including several European tourists who took the disease home with them as an unfortunate souvenir. Dengue is a mosquito-borne virus that causes a debilitating illness characterized by high fever and severe joint pain. It is occasionally, though not usually, fatal. Visitors to the Madeira archipelago are advised to take extra precautions against mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, as the species that carries dengue is most active during the day.
