Uganda: Will Deadly Virus Outbreaks Scare Off Tourists?
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Recent outbreaks of deadly Marburg Fever and Yellow Fever viruses may cause tourists to avoid Uganda altogether, tourism officials fear. Marburg Fever has claimed four lives so far in the southwestern Kibale district, the same region where Ebola surfaced just a few months ago. In addition, at least one case of Yellow Fever has been confirmed in the northeastern part of the country, along with several cases of hemorrhagic fever. So far, all of the outbreaks have occurred in outlying areas where tourists are unlikely to travel. However, current visitors to Uganda should seek medical advice and procure appropriate vaccinations if they do not have them already. Note that vaccination certificates may be required upon returning home from Uganda, or when traveling onward to other countries.
