Italy: Four Dead as Flash Flooding Swamps Tuscany and Umbria
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Four people died and at least 100 had to be evacuated from their homes when severe flash flooding hit central and northern Italy, including popular tourist destinations in Tuscany and Umbria. The heavy rains combined with an unusually high tide in Venice left more than 70 percent of the historic city underwater, with water levels deep enough for some tourists to attempt to swim across the Piazza San Marco. Storms began to subside Nov. 13, but extensive power outages and submerged roads and rail lines continued to affect large areas of the region.
