Thailand: Crime Protest Video has Tourists Cancelling Krabi Trips
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |A homemade music video protesting the release of a known rapist has prompted tourists to cancel upcoming trips to Krabi in large numbers. The video, which went viral on YouTube, was produced by the father of a 19-year-old Dutch tourist who was raped and beaten while vacationing in Ao Nang. Her case made international headlines recently when the rapist, a Thai tour guide, was found and arrested, but later released on bail. Violence against tourists has been a problem in Krabi for years, particularly in the high-end Ao Nang resort area. A Thai tourism official acknowledged that crimes against tourists—even violent crimes—are typically treated lightly by provincial authorities.
