Worldwide: United Computer Glitch Grounds Thousands

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | November 21st, 2012 | Trackback

Thousands of United Airlines passengers around the globe were stranded Nov. 15 when half of the airline’s 5,500 daily flights were cancelled or delayed due to a computer outage. United merged with Continental last spring, and this is the third time since June that the company has experienced a major issue with its integrated computer systems. As recently as October, executives admitted to a “problem period” following the merger, but insisted that the company had resolved its integration issues and was ready to win back any customers lost over the turbulent summer. Among other efforts, the airline was able to improve its September on-time percentage to 82 percent, after ranking last among the major carriers for on-time flights in July.
