Italy: Sistine Chapel Tourists Will Be ‘Vacuumed & Cooled’
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Future visitors to the Sistine Chapel may expect to be “vacuumed and cooled” to reduce their environmental impact on the famous frescoes. Vatican officials were publicly criticized earlier this year for allowing the priceless paintings to be damaged by too many tourists. Unwilling to limit the numbers of visitors to the museum, the Vatican has announced a plan to replace the aging ventilation instead. The proposed system will suction dust from the shoes and clothes of incoming visitors, and air-condition the chapel’s interior to help control the heat and human pollution generated by 20,000 bodies per day.
