Brazil: Street Mosaics Installed with Smartphone Codes
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Never mind the guidebook, tourist information is now available on the street in Rio de Janeiro—literally. Officials have incorporated Quick Response or “QR” codes—two-dimensional bar codes that can be read by a smartphone—into the traditional black-and-white pavement mosaics found around the city. After downloading the app, visitors can scan QR codes as they stroll, using them to access a map of the area along with relevant historic and cultural facts in multiple languages. The technology may not replace guidebooks, but the city plans to install at least 30 QR mosaics near its famous beaches and historic sites.
