Haiti: Poor Infrastructure Complicates Travel Risks
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |The U.S. Dept. of State has issued an updated travel warning for Haiti, citing issues such as violent crime, severe weather, cholera outbreaks and infrastructure that is “unable to fully support even normal activity, much less crisis situations.” As Haiti cannot provide adequate security, medical facilities or emergency response systems, those who visit are urged to use organizations that have reliable support systems in place. Evacuation insurance is also strongly advised. In 2012, travelers arriving in Port-au-Prince from the United States were attacked and robbed upon leaving the airport, and at least two U.S. citizens were shot and killed in robbery and kidnapping incidents.
