Italy: Vatican Attractions are Cash-Only For Now
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |The Italian central bank has shut down electronic payments in the Vatican city-state as of Jan. 1, creating even longer lines than usual as tourists count out Euros—if they have them—for museum tickets and souvenirs. During a routine inspection, officials found that the electronic payment service provider for the Vatican had never obtained proper authorization, and the Holy See was not in compliance with anti-money laundering safeguards required by the European Union. The Vatican has been working to resolve the issue, but in the meantime, visits to the Sistine Chapel and other Vatican-run attractions are cash-only.
