By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | January 20th, 2013 | Trackback

As many as 3,400 passengers were stranded at Narita airport overnight after 3 inches of snowfall dumped across the Tokyo metropolitan area in 9 hours Jan. 14. During the worst of the storm, aviation officials were forced to cancel at least 460 domestic flights, while airport staff handed out food and blankets and travelers tried to get comfortable for a long wait. Road travel and train services, including the bullet train, were also delayed throughout the region. One death and nearly 900 injuries, mostly of the slip-and-fall variety, have been blamed on the extreme weather.
