Serbia: Villagers Use Vampire Legend to Lure Tourists
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |No one has filmed a vampire trilogy there yet, but the tiny village of Zarozje, near the Bosnian border, is embracing its local vampire legend in the hope of attracting more visitors. The strategy seems to be working, as curious tourists trail in from all over the country to see a decrepit mill, supposedly haunted by an undead man called Sava Savanovic. The alleged bloodsucker has become so popular that tourism officials have created a Facebook page for him—on which he is depicted holding a glass of the local beer. Noting the success of this experiment, another town nearby has also claimed the character as their own, prompting a good-natured vampire rivalry.
