Tanzania: U.S. Embassy Warns of Street Crime Wave

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | January 30th, 2013 | Trackback

A spike in street crime has prompted the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam to issue an emergency message to its citizens. In the past three months alone, more than 20 U.S. citizens have been victims of a violent assault. Taxi robbery is increasingly common, along with bag snatching, burglary, hotel robbery and ATM “express” kidnapping—where the victim is forced to withdraw funds from several ATMs until the daily limit is reached. To minimize exposure to opportunistic crimes, carry no more than a small amount of cash and a concealed cell phone on your person. Walking or jogging alone is not advised at any time, and visitors should be extremely cautious when using taxis. More information is available from the Embassy or http://travel.state.gov.
