India: New Outbreak of Swine Flu Confirmed
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |The Ministry of Health has confirmed a new outbreak of swine flu (H1N1 virus) that has killed at least 94 people and affected 450 since Jan. 1. Most of the cases have occurred in northern Rajasthan, although 60 cases and three deaths so far were reported in the capital city of New Delhi. The virus, which reached world-pandemic levels in 2009, usually causes severe seasonal flu symptoms, but can also lead to respiratory failure and death. Although the pandemic officially ended in 2010 and a successful H1N1 vaccine was introduced, authorities in New Delhi were taking precautions to isolate the outbreak and prevent the disease from spreading.
