Japan: Health Warnings Issued as Smog Rolls in From China
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Public health warnings went out Feb. 4 as a thick cloud of smog from China blew in on the wind, causing air pollution levels to exceed government limits in some parts of the island nation. The highest concentration of dangerous particles hovered over Kyushu, worrying residents about the effects of exposure. Under such conditions, small children and those with respiratory ailments are particularly at risk for developing asthma and other serious problems. Visitors should monitor local media for updates, and consult a physician if they have any symptoms of respiratory illness. The situation is unlikely to improve relations between the two countries, which have been frosty since a territorial dispute arose last year.
