Puerto Rico: Medical Tourism on the Rise

By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink | No Comments | February 6th, 2013 | Trackback

Thanks to its proximity to the U.S. and safe reputation, Puerto Rico is moving quickly up the hot list of “medical tourism” destinations. Patients from the U.S. can save 60 to 80 percent on medical costs, and since it is a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico’s doctors and medical facilities are held to the same licensing requirements and standards. Also, U.S. citizens can visit without a visa or a passport, which makes a trip easier to organize—though some form of government-issued ID is still required. In 2012, an estimated 1.6 million Americans received medical care abroad, a number that is expected to increase by 35 percent each year.
