Spain: Hundreds of Flights Cancelled Due to Iberia Strike
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |Hundreds of flights were cancelled at Madrid’s international airport Feb. 18, the first day of a planned 15-day strike by Iberia airline workers. Riot police used force to push back thousands of protestors from the terminals, though no injuries were initially reported. Protests were held at most of the other major airports across the country. The strike was expected to affect about 70,000 passengers and cause an estimated 1,200 flight cancellations over the next few weeks. Iberia’s employees are disputing a restructuring plan that will cut 3,800 jobs as part of a recent merger with British Airways.
