Japan: Officials Work to Stop Fukushima Leak

By Larry Habegger and Dani Burlison | Permalink | No Comments | September 5th, 2013 | Trackback

Officials announced plans to stop the flow of irradiated water into the sea from Fukushima’s damaged nuclear reactor, the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl. Approximately 400 tons of groundwater flows from surrounding mountains and enters the reactor buildings every day, where it mixes with highly toxic water before running into the sea. The Japanese government has pledged nearly $500 million to freeze the soil around the plant in hopes of blocking the leakage through an underground ice barrier. There is no set project completion date and travelers should avoid the area and surrounding water until further notice.
