Russia: Suicide Bombing in Volgograd

By Larry Habegger and Dani Burlison | Permalink | No Comments | October 25th, 2013 | Trackback

A suicide bombing in Volgograd, the planned venue for the 2018 World Cup, has raised safety concerns as Russia plans the 2014 Winter Games about 550 miles away in Sochi. The bus bombing, allegedly committed by a woman from North Caucasus, killed six and wounded more than 30 others. The incident happened a week after riots erupted in Moscow and just days after a mosque bombing killed two suspected Islamic militants in North Caucasus. Officials continue to work on containing militant insurgencies but are concerned that the violence may continue to spread to other Muslim regions in the country.
