Bangladesh: Strikes Turn Violent

By Larry Habegger and Dani Burlison | Permalink | No Comments | November 1st, 2013 | Trackback

At least four people were killed during a three-day strike Oct. 27-29 headed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in an effort to bring down the government before January elections. The country’s major tourist season is just beginning, but many tour companies warned against traveling to the country as the strikes grew violent. Clashes erupted in many small towns, and bomb blasts and arson were reported in Dhaka Oct. 28. Transit was suspended during the strike. Visitors should follow local news for current developments.
