Visitors to Bali will soon be asked to pay an additional entry fee in the amount of $10. The fee is separate from the Visa on Arrival Fee and officials hope to use the collected funds for preservation of the local culture and environment. The new ordinance is currently being drafted by local government agencies. In the western island of Sumatra visitors and locals are warned to stay approximately three miles away from Mount Sinabung volcano, a popular hiking destination in the northern region of the island. Airlines have also been warned to avoid the area. The volcano first showed signs of activity in September and began spewing ash and rock Nov. 24 during the first in a series of eruptions. Visitors should heed local warnings and follow news reports about safety in the area.
