The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert Nov. 8 cautioning tourists to avoid various parts of the country as the Nov. 20 elections approach. Clashes between government security forces and the armed opposition, Renamo, have intensified in recent weeks, turning violent in Sofala and Nampula provinces. An increase in kidnappings has been reported and while officials say that U.S. citizens are not specifically targeted, all tourists should take precautions and follow updates about security risks.
