Ukraine: Protestors Fill Streets of Kiev

By Larry Habegger and Dani Burlison | Permalink | No Comments | November 29th, 2013 | Trackback

An estimated 100,000 demonstrators filled the streets of Kiev Nov. 24 in what may have been just the first in a series of protests. The marches were spurred by the government’s decision to back out of talks with the European Union and to instead work on strengthening economic ties with Russia. Riot police were mostly peaceful, though one incident of tear gas use was reported when protestors threw items during a standoff in front of the Cabinet of Ministers building. Sources say the protests may continue as demonstrators hope to pressure President Viktor Yanukovych to resume talks with the EU.
